IN ALL THAT YOU DO: BE FILLED WITH CARE. BE FULL OF CARE
MA is named for our mothers, Mary and Alem. They wanted everything for us: space to be and do what they could not. We felt how our mothers loved us, beyond language barriers and tough exteriors.
We are fruit of the bravery and discernment gained from their choice to break from tradition to begin again. In their honor, we are cultivating a workplace & third space where our people gain the daily experience of protection and self-determination we were fortified by.

In 1984, Alem Andemariam fled Eritrea on camelback with her six children: one on her back, one in her belly, and one lost on the way. Alem was the only one of her thirteen siblings to immigrate. Even boy’s schooling was a luxury in the 1950's; she never learned English or surpassed an elementary education. She secured a laundry job at UW Medicine, working to support her extended family with her husband.
In the late 1940s, Mary Lee’s family left everything in China to seek refuge in Taiwan during the Communist Revolution. She was two years old. Mary immigrated to the U.S. after college to pursue a Masters of Economics at the University of Western Illinois. After her 20-year career in banking and finance, she went on to be one of the founders of Asian Services In Action, a health & human services agency in NE Ohio.
